You may have noticed our mascot is a llama in a poncho. That wasn't an arbitrary pick — llamas are genuinely one of the more interesting animals on the planet once you dig past "the ones that spit." Here are 10 facts worth knowing before your next quiz night.

1. They're not camels, but they're close relatives. Llamas belong to the camelid family alongside camels, alpacas, vicuñas, and guanacos — but unlike camels, they have no hump.
2. Their wild ancestor is the guanaco. Andean peoples domesticated llamas from wild guanacos roughly 4,000–5,000 years ago.
3. The "spit" isn't really spit. When a llama spits at a rival, it's usually regurgitating stomach contents, not saliva — a warning shot mostly aimed at other llamas, not people.
