QuizA teacher recently used QuizLlama for an English test, so we added a ready-to-play English — Synonyms round. It has 30 multiple-choice questions that ask students to choose a word with a similar meaning, usually inside a short sentence. That context helps students think about how a word is being used instead of matching a vocabulary list by sight alone.
For students ready for a bigger challenge, there's also English — Advanced Vocabulary, a 30-question round built around challenging words often encountered in GMAT- and GRE-style vocabulary practice.
How to find and run it
- Open English — Synonyms in the Languages category.
- Select the questions you want, then create a quiz. You can use the whole set for a review or choose a shorter round for a warm-up.
- Start a hosted game and share the game PIN. Students join from their own devices; for individual practice, use the quiz's Practice mode.
Ways to use it in class
- Warm-up: Play five to ten questions at the start of class and ask students to explain what clue in the sentence helped them choose.
- Review: Run the full set after a vocabulary unit. Pause after tricky items and discuss why the other choices do not fit the sentence.
- Team challenge: Put students in small groups and have them agree on an answer before submitting. The timer adds energy, while the discussion keeps the focus on meaning.
- Follow-up writing: Ask students to write a new sentence using the target word and one of its synonyms. This checks whether they can use the words, not just recognize them.
Adjust it to your students
These are general vocabulary activities, not official GMAT or GRE questions, and they are not grade-specific or standards-aligned assessments. Preview the set before class, choose a subset that fits your students' reading level, and treat scores as a quick formative check. Synonyms can differ in tone and context, so invite students to explain their reasoning when two words seem close.
